Description

This is the latest addition to my collection of plot diagrams

and the lack of a connection between Lake Washington and Puget Sound

because electric streetcars required electric power

but that's a far cry from being able to take BART to Menlo Park or Redwood City

San Francisco Muni Rapid subway proposal and the approved BART system, 1966 Size:18x18 This is the latest additionAfter the approval of the BART system in 1962, the city of San Francisco decided that it had to keep up with the Joneses. After all, a shiny new automated subway with aluminum cars made the aging streetcars of the San Francisco Municipal Railway look bad by comparison. Thus, in 1966, San Francisco voters were asked to upgrade most of the surviving lines to subway operation, and to build an all new subway under Geary Boulevard. (The voters declined.)
